The ESL students in S1H have been doing a unit on Transport. They have been discussing the advantage and disadvantages of allowing cars in the city.  A “compass point” thinking routine was undertaken to help  guide their thinking and discussion from different points.  We video taped a small part of the session below.

This week the Jollybops show came to our school to teach us about science with an aboriginal perspective. The Professor and “Rusty” did some cool science experiments relating to water, fire, air, gases and sound. Some of us were selected from the audience to participate in the experiments. We even got to play the didgeridoo.

This week we had a visit from the CSIRO and got to play with the simple Bee-bot robots. We worked in pairs to give our robots simple instructions (by pressing the arrow buttons) so they could move along a grid. We had lots of fun but soon realised how important it was to give clear directions.  Some of our robots went walkabout but we soon got them back on track!

We have just read the book “Who Sank the Boat” by Pamela Allen.  At the end of the story the  boat sinks.  We  had  a discussion about which animal made the boat sink. Some thought it was the mouse, who was the lightest of all. What do you think? 

We then decided to do some science experiments to find out what things in the  classroom float and what sink.  First we had to make prediction and then test these out.  Take a look at our photos as we  test our predictions.

The stage 1 ESL group has been using the new bee-bot program and game mats to consolidate the work they have been doing on shapes,the alphabet, colours and positional language. In the attached photo you can see them using the bee-bot (electronic beetle) to move across the game mats. Each student needed to program a series of directions into the beetle in order for it to move into a location on the game mat. The students had a great time but realised how important it was to give clear instructions. The beetle went around in circles quite a few times but through a trial and error process they were able to work out the right directions. This week kindergarten visited the zoo to see the animals they have been learning about. They saw Australian animals, reptiles, African animals, birds, sea creatures and best of all, the new elephant enclosure. Take a look at their close encounters with the animals at Taronga Zoo (the best zoo in the world with a million dollar view of Sydney Harbour.)

 Stage 1 have been discussing the use of colour in visual texts. We discovered that there are many ideas and feelings associated with different colours.  We worked in groups to discuss and brainstorm our own ideas and feelings. These were some of them. 

RED               - anger, danger,  love, traffic lights, hot

BLUE            - calm, the sea, cool, water

GREEN        - cool,  grass,  fresh, bright

YELLOW    - hot, bright, happy, the sun

BLACK       - dark, scary, evil, bad luck

BROWN    - dull,  boring , dirty, old photos

WHITE     - snow, cold, bright, clean

GREY       - sad, depressing, cloudy days

After this activity we looked at our shared reading text “The Very Ordinary Caterpillar” by Gary Fleming. We discussed how the illustrator used colour in the pictures. We noticed that all the animals and plants  in the pictures were brightly coloured except for the caterpillar,  who was small and brown. We think this was done intentionally to communicate the idea that the caterpillar was very ordinary and boring (which is associated with the colour brown.) What do you think???     Check us out while we’re busy at work.

Today stage1 looked at the work of the artist Piet Mondrian.  We discussed his use of horizontal and vertical lines, rectangular and square shapes and the primary colours of blue red and yellow. The only other two colours he used in his artworks were black and white. Our class was divided into two groups so we could do both activites with our two teachers.  We made our own art works using the IWB ( interactive whiteboard) and a computer program called 2paint a picture. We also made artworks using paper cut into squares and rectangles, and straight lines which were arranged vertically and horizontally.
